A veritable superstar, Sia may be my favorite current mass media artist now. At the height of her creative powers, Sia released her first Christmas Album 'Everyday Is Christmas' last year just before Christmas. This year it has been repackaged to include 3 new songs for 2018. What an awesome song with her patented piano intro. Of course, this is the artist who provided Paloma Faith with her stunning hit song "Warrior", which featured greatly in the latest Avengers movie "Infinity War'. Sia's demo was originally called "Black and Blue" See if you can find it.

Now, this is the gorgeous lush Christmas song we always thought Paul McCartney would do. Oh, this isn't him? More the pity. Nevertheless, in this instance, and just in time for Christmas, 'The Nines' (or at least main man Steve Eggars) have managed to outdo McCartney at his own game. See if you don't agree.

Classic Christmas Tunes 2 - Ray Davies & Chrissie Hynde - Postcard From London

Do you like Chrismas Duets? Well here is one that you really should like. Performed by Ray Davies (former frontman of "The Kinks") and Chrissie Hynde (frontwoman for The Pretenders). Yes, I know, they used to be an item. This song may be what is known as a peripheral Christmas song. It is has its deft touches of Christmas.

"It was a city I used to know
And as a child when it was Christmas
I played in the winter snow"

and yet another verse of seasonal childhood memories

"We built a snowman by Hampstead Pond."

"Walked down to Waterloo at Yuletide and we sang so many songs"

It is also a directly song about lost familiarity of places, landmarks, and even pubs in one's hometown and quite clearly the importance of remembrance. Thus, although not directly a Chistmas song, it does conjure up the feel, mood, ambience, and nostalgia one routinely associates with Christmas. Of course, the lovely choir harkens me back to Christmas. Hope it does you as well:)

The Pretenders have always been one of my all time fave bands. There is just something about the quiver in Chrissie Hynde's voice. In a cover version, we will, naturally, have to dispense with Chrissie's unique voice/ However, now I am quite taken by Merrie Amsterburg's minimalist approach to this seasonal classic. Both her impassioned singing and the stripped-down instrumentation to arrive at the very essence of the tune See if it doesn't grow on you.
